Australian Marriage Equality (AME) today welcomed the announcement by the ACT Legislative Assembly to support marriage equality for every Australian.

“We welcome the decision by the ACT Legislative Assembly to call on the Federal Government to let MPs do their job and vote on the issue of marriage equality”, Australian Marriage Equality, National Spokesperson, Shirleene Robinson said.

“The ACT Government and its Chief Minister Andrew Barr have long been strong supporters of LGBTI rights and this commitment to work towards achieving marriage equality is a great step forward.

“We welcome the commitment by the ACT Legislative Assembly to support marriage equality should an unnecessary plebiscite proceed.

“AME welcomes the commitment from the Chief Minister to lead the local ACT campaign for marriage equality in the event of a plebiscite. If a plebiscite is imposed upon us we have a duty to LGBTI people to run a positive, inclusive and winning ‘Yes’ campaign.

“We look forward to working with the Chief Minister and the Government as we work towards a pathway forward to equality.

“Whatever the pathway, marriage equality is about the people we know and love, not politics. This is a straightforward issue about a fair go for every Australian”, Dr Robinson concluded.
