Australian Marriage Equality (AME) today thanked the Brisbane City Council and the Mayor Graham Quirk for showing the leadership to lead and pass a motion in support of marriage equality.
“We applaud the efforts of the Mayor and the Council for leading the way in backing marriage equality and recognising the importance of it to Brisbane,” AME Queensland Co-Convener Peter Black said.
“Brisbane has now become the first council in Queensland to pass a motion in support of marriage equality.
“We would like to acknowledge the positive impact this will have on LGBTI Queenslanders, their families and friends,” AME Queensland Co-Convener Peter Black said.
“Marriage equality is a simple issue of fairness and equality for all Australians and it’s an issue that can be achieved by a vote in the Parliament,” AME Queensland Co-Convener Sharon Dane said.
“It is great to see that all the candidates contesting the Federal seat of Brisbane are supporting marriage equality,” Ms Dane said.
“It demonstrates that our elected representatives can and do want to vote for marriage equality and a fair go for everyone.
“The issue of Marriage Equality is about members of our families, our friends, neighbours and workmates. Every Australian should be afforded the same opportunities,” Ms Dane concluded.
