Marriage equality advocates have welcomed a new study which shows allowing same-sex couples to marry is good for their children.

The American Academy of Paediatrics study released today recommends marriage equality as a means of “guaranteeing long term security” for the children of same-sex couples.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“This is a landmark study because it conclusively shows marriage equality is good for children and families, and not the kind of threat to families opponents of reform have previously claimed it is.”

“We will be making sure all MPs have a copy of this study and understand its implications for the Australian marriage equality debate.”

Australian gay father of two, Tom Snow, also welcomed the report.

“My family faces institutionalised discrimination every day because my partner and I cannot marry, and what this report confirms is that removing this discrimination will make a real difference to the lives of my children and my family.”

“Allowing gay and lesbian parents to marry helps gives stability and permanency to relationships, and removes stigma and prejudice, both of which are good for children.”
