Marriage equality advocates have called out Federal Treasurer, Wayne Swan, for declaring that Bruce Springsteen is his political inspiration, saying that the US rockstar is a strong advocate for marriage equality while the Treasurer is against it.

In 2009 Springsteen said that marriage equality was a civil rights issue. (Report here)

But in a letter to constituents Mr Swan has said he will vote against the right of same-sex couples to marry.

Alex Greenwich, national convener of Australian Marriage Equality, said:

“Bruce Springsteen is indeed an inspiration to many because he stands for values like fairness and justice, particularly for those who have been forgotten and marginalised.”

“If Mr Swan gets his inspiration from Bruce Springsteen, why does he ignore the star’s call for marriage equality?”
