Same sex marriage is an issue that vexes Australian politics. Overwhelmingly Australians support same sex marriage, yet our political leadership remains unmoved. Perhaps fearing an electoral backlash or uproar from the churches, the pollies have awkwardly left the issue in the too-hard basket.

There has been alarm expressed from the usual quarters on the issue. I often think that the fuss would be mitigated if it was made clear to the happy clappers that same sex marriage is not compulsory. If you’re a bloke and don’t want to marry the bloke next door, that’s OK. You don’t have to do it.

But the God botherers who cite biblical scripture in support of their case have it wrong on same sex marriage. The overwhelming dilemma for them is that Jesus had it right.

The history of Christian marriage is a murky business; founded on rubbery notions because it is of itself contradictory to vast tracts of the New Testament. In order to make sense of marriage, we need to put the Bible down and go back to where it all began.
