The debate over homosexuality and equal rights has been stirred up over a Catholic priest’s decision to use Christmas mass as a forum to deliver a campaign against same sex marriage.

Gympie’s St Patrick’s Parish priest Pat Cassidy caused controversy by choosing the traditional children’s mass on Christmas Eve, and the following Christmas Day masses around the region, to instruct parishioners on the importance of signing a petition to “protect the unique institution of marriage as traditionally understood…between a man and a woman”.

This is the Catholic Church’s response to a Greens’ motion — for politicians to seek the views of their electorates on changing marriage laws — passed with Labor’s support in the House of Representatives last month.
