Australian Marriage Equality (AME) today said it was vital that every Australian is empowered and informed about their local candidate’s position on marriage equality for tomorrow’s election.

“Tomorrow, millions of Australians across the country will cast votes that collectively, will determine so many of the issues we care about including support in Parliament for marriage equality”, Australian Marriage Equality, National Spokesperson, Dr Shirleene Robinson said.

“Our ‘Vote for Equality’ site enables every Australian to make informed decisions about where their candidates sit on marriage equality.

“We believe marriage equality should be resolved by a simple vote in the Parliament and so it’s important that there is an increased support in the next parliament to ensure marriage becomes a reality for every Australian.

“We know that a plebiscite is legally unnecessary and very expensive and should be avoided”, Dr Robinson said.

“This election we have more candidates than ever before in support of marriage equality and more LGBTI candidates from every party than ever before in our history of campaigning for marriage equality.

“Marriage Equality is a simple issue of fairness and equality. All Australians should be treated equally under the law and that includes being able to marry the person they love.

“Extending marriage to all Australians ensures our laws reflect those values of which we are most proud.

“This issue is about members of our families, our friends, neighbours and workmates. They should be able to have the same aspirations and opportunities in life as everyone else.

“This election we need to make sure we have an increased support of marriage equality in parliament”, Dr Robinson said.
