Australian Marriage Equality today launched its election campaign at a forum in Goulburn discussing why marriage equality is a simple issue of fairness and equality.
“It is great to be in Goulburn today talking with local community members about why marriage equality matters,” Chair of Australian Marriage Equality, Alex Greenwich said.
“Marriage Equality is about members of our families, our friends, neighbours and workmates. Everyone should be able to have the same aspirations and opportunities in life.
“Our goal is for everyone to be able to share in the happiness, security and commitment that comes from marriage.
The purpose of our election forum is to talk with the local community about why marriage equality matters and how it’s also about our shared values of fairness and equality for all,” Mr Greenwich said.
Joining Mr Greenwich at the Goulburn forum was local marriage equality campaigner Tom Sebo and Tiernan Brady who was the political director of the recently successful Irish referendum on marriage equality.
“As we pounded the pavement across Goulburn, Yass, Young, Cootamundra, Crookwell and Taralga – we found more and more people were in favour of Marriage Equality,” Mr Sebo said.
“Since our campaign began more people are talking about equality. We hope Tiernan can help not only inform that conversation but also inspire locals to get involved,” Mr Sebo said.
“I am delighted to be here in Goulburn for my first time to share some of the insights about the Irish experience,” Mr Brady said.
“These forums highlight the importance of having respectful and open conversations with all community members,” Mr Brady said.
