Advocates have welcomed support for marriage equality from the Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) and the Council of Public Health Institutions of Australia (CAPHIA).

The two organisations have written to all federal MPs and senators just days after mental health initiative, Beyond Blue, also issued a statement supporting the reform.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“Marriage equality is key to improving public health because it will remove discrimination and stigma and because it will allow same-sex partners and their families the health benefits that can come with marriage.”

“We welcome support from Australia’s public health organisations and hope it prompts federal politicians who oppose marriage equality to rethink their stance.”

Copies of the statement and the letter to federal members are attached.
