Australian Marriage Equality has sought a meeting with Philip Ruddock to discuss his concerns over the legislation presented to the parliament by the leader of the Opposition.

Australian Marriage Equality National Director, Rodney Croome, said:

“We value Mr Ruddock’s interest in the marriage equality debate and hope to discuss his concerns regrading the proposed legislation and process”

“We are concerned that Mr. Ruddock’s interpretation of the “French model” suggests he wants to see marriage abolished as a state institution and handed over to the church. Currently 73% of marriages are currently conducted out of churches, and a lot of heterosexual couples would also be concerned about this proposal”

“The reality is France now celebrates marriage equality and all French couples get married in a civil setting, but in addition can also opt for a religious wedding should they choose and should their church allow it”

“We hope to be able to reach a common ground with Mr Ruddock, who we know values fairness”
