Indigenous Affairs Minister, Nigel Scullion, has given in principle support for marriage equality declaring he “absolutely” supports the concept.

Senator Scullion, who is also the National Party leader in the Senate, is the second National Party politicians in two days to declare support for reform following Darren Chester yesterday.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“We thank Senator Scullion for his leadership on this important and overdue reform, and for reminding the nation that marriage equality matters to Australians living in rural and regional areas.”

“Senator Scullion’s support for marriage equality increases pressure for a free vote because as a member of the ministry he cannot vote for reform unless a free vote is granted.”

On this evening’s Radio National Drive program with Patricia Karvelas, Senator Scullion said he supports a free vote and “absolutely, absolutely” supports the principle of a gender neutral Marriage Act.

He added that he would want to see the detail of any legislation before finally committing his vote.
