Advocates say Shadow Treasurer, Chris Bowen’s, support for marriage equality is a watershed moment in the marriage equality debate.

Mr Bowen, who represents a relatively religious and socially conservative electorate in western Sydney, and has previously voted against marriage equality, today said he will back the reform.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“Opponents of marriage equality have consistently claimed that Sydney’s western suburbs are the bulwark against marriage equality.”

“But Mr Bowen’s support shows western Sydney is as comfortable with marriage equality as the rest of the nation.”

“It also shows that personal stories from local constituents are what will make the difference.”

Mr Bowen has said that a major element in his decision was talking to friends who have travelled overseas to marry.

Australian Marriage Equality recently launched a grass roots campaign in western Sydney.
