Marriage equality advocates have described the Tasmanian Liberal Council’s support for a motion excluding same-sex couples from marriage as a shameful step backwards.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome said,

“At a time when countries like the UK and the US are moving forward on marriage equality it is shameful that the Tasmanian Liberal Party wants to take us backwards.”

“The majority of Tasmanians who support marriage equality will be appalled that the Liberal Party has upheld discrimination in one of our core social and legal institutions.”

On Saturday in Launceston, the Liberal Party State Council passed a motion confirming the Party’s exclusion of same-sex couples from marriage. The motion was preceded by an emotional debate.
