In the lead up to tomorrow’s Mardi Gras parade, the MP whose legislation achieved marriage equality in New Zealand has urged Tony Abbott to allow a free vote on the reform.

In a video released today by Australian Marriage Equality, NZ Labour MP, Louisa Wall, says her message to Tony Abbott is, “don’t be afraid of democracy and don’t be afraid of the people”.

Directly addressing Australian Coalition MPs, Ms Wall says,

“Marriage quality is about democracy.”

“For those of you who believe in democracy, who want to engage your communities, I would encourage you to ask for a free vote.”

Marriage equality was achieved in New Zealand with the governing National Party allowing a free vote.

Australia’s Liberal/National Government is yet to allow a free vote, despite growing support in party ranks for the move.

Ms Wall is in Sydney and available for interviews.
