Australian Marriage Equality has welcomed the growing support for marriage equality from candidates, the community, and prominent Australians. The Australian Labor Party will today kick-start their “It’s Time” marriage equality campaign with Ricki-Lee, the Veronicas, and Darren Hayes, a new Fairfax Nielsen Poll has support for reform consistently high at 65% and has found support for the issue will be key in deciding the vote of around 1.5 Million voters.

Australian Marriage Equality, Deputy Director Ivan Hinton, said:

“Marriage Equality is giving voters hope this federal election campaign and we are confident this will translate to a parliament that is more supportive of reform than the last one”

“Today Ricki-Lee, the Veronicas, and Darren Hayes will add their name to a growing list of prominent Australians who have long supporter marriage equality, including Olivia Newton-John, Jimmy Barnes, Magda Szubanski, Hugh Jackman and David Pocock. They are reflecting the aspirations of Australians to join countries like the UK, New Zealand, and Canada in embracing marriage equality”

In addition to letter-boxing hundreds of thousands of homes across the country, Australian Marriage Equality has also launched their Vote4Love website:

“This election voters, especially young voters, will be supporting candidates who support equality. In just over one week, our how to vote information has been accessed over 30,000 times by people seeking their candidates position on marriage equality”

The Fairfax Nielsen Poll found that 65% of voters support marriage equality, including 75% of female voters, it also found that for 16% of voters marriage equality will be an issue that decides their vote:

“By these numbers marriage equality will play a key role in the election outcome, especially in marginal seats, with support for issue deciding the vote of around 1.5 Million voters”. Mr Hinton said

Previous polling has suggested the Marriage Equality is also the top civil justice issue and among the top 5 issues for voters aged between 18 to 24.

Mr Hinton said a strategic and cooperative approach from elected supporters of marriage equality will be what helps marriage equality happen sooner than later.
