Marriage equality advocates say Kevin Rudd’s support for the reform has contributed to his strong showing in opinion polls released today.

A national poll released today show Mr Rudd is preferred prime minister only three days after being re-appointed to the post. Support for the Labor Party has also increased.

Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Rodney Croome, said,

“Mr Rudd’s high-profile support for marriage equality has a strong appeal to younger voters who see this as a signature issue.”

“In the same way that Barack Obama benefitted from his support for marriage equality in last year’s US election, Kevin Rudd has gained support from the many young Australians who are passionate enough about marriage equality for it to influence their vote.”

“The message to Tony Abbott is that he must also move forward on the issue, by at least allowing a conscience vote, or the Coalition will lose young voters and inner-city voters.”

“The message to Labor candidates is to come out in support of marriage equality if they want to benefit from the reform’s strong appeal to younger voters.”

Others who have claimed Labor will benefit from Mr Rudd’s stance include ACT deputy chief minister, Andrew Barr, who has said the issue could determine the outcome in key inner-city seats. For more click here.
