Same-sex marriage opponents, Save Marriage Coalition, commissioned a survey of 400 people across the state.

The survey asked people to rate how important 12 different social and economic issues were to the future of the state.

Spokesman Guy Barnett, who is also a state Liberal candidate, says same-sex marriage was ranked second last in terms of importance, only above changes to abortion laws.

“The message from Tasmanians is that that’s not the priority, for Tasmanians, and it should put an end to the efforts of the ongoing distraction of attempts to legalise same sex marriage in Tasmania,” he said.

Supporters of same-sex marriage have dismissed the survey.

Australian Marriage Equality’s Rodney Croome says the results are misleading.

“It’s irrelevant to compare the importance people give to jobs and health and education, to the importance they give to the issue of marriage equality, because jobs, health and education effects everyone, while marriage equality only directly effects a small minority of Tasmanians.”
