EQUALITY is the issue on everyone’s lips at the moment, with New Zealand passing same-sex marriage and the issue coming before the State Parliament again.

Today, a marriage equality family barbecue was held in the hope that it would help show how much passing this bill would mean to the LGBTI community.

The co-ordinator Nicholas Outterside said the purpose of the barbecue was to show the community that marriage equality is an issue that is still alive.

“For me marriage equality is more than letting two same sex people to get married, it also affects transgenders, bisexuals and intersex,” Mr Outterside said.

“In the past they’ve had to hide who they are from family, friends and society, but now they get a chance to be who they are in a safe and supportive environment.”

Mr Outterside was pleased with the turn-out of about 50 people.
