Australian marriage equality advocates have welcomed the passage of marriage equality legislation through the Uruguayan Senate, setting that nation on track to be the twelfth in the world the second in Latin America to allow same-sex couples to marry.

Australian Marriage Equality national director, Rodney Croome, said,

“The majority of Australians who support marriage equality will look to what is happening in Uruguay with a mix of happiness that the reform is moving ahead and embarrassed that Australia is not part of that movement.”

“When same-sex couples begin soon to marry in Britain and New Zealand this embarrassment will only grow.”

“We urge Australia’s legislators to uphold our nation’s reputation for tolerance and fairness by passing marriage equality.”

The marriage equality legislation endorsed by the Uruguayan Senate must now be confirmed by the Lower House and signed into law by the President, both of which are expected to occur in the coming days.
