The former High Court Judge, Michael Kirby, says the current climate of Australian federal politics is hindering the progress of gay rights.

On a speaking tour in Perth, Mr Kirby said Australia had made progress in accepting homosexuality.

But, Mr Kirby, who has been in an openly gay relationship for more than 40 years, says bickering on both sides of politics is the reason for slow movement on same-sex marriage.
