At a recent rally for marriage equality in Sydney I told the crowd of more than a thousand people: ”Go spend your money on Tasmanian food products and drinks. Send the Tasmanians a message of support. And to the Premier of Tasmania we say this, ‘Good on you for showing leadership.”

It was a far cry from what I advocated 18 years ago, when I led a boycott of Tasmanian products.

In 1994 the UN Human Rights Committee declared Tasmania’s anti-gay laws to be a breach of Australia’s human rights obligations, but the Tasmanian government didn’t care.
