TWO Labor backbenchers have said the federal government should mount a constitutional challenge if the Tasmanian Parliament passes a law allowing gay marriage, while Julia Gillard dodged the question.

New South Wales Labor MP John Murphy said he thought ”we should be doing everything to defeat a redefinition of marriage – so do the majority of people I represent. The Tasmanian law would be the thin end of the wedge.
