Following the announcement from GetUp National Director Simon Sheikh that he will step down from his role, marriage equality advocates have praised his contribution to making Australia a fairer and equal place for LGBTI Australians:

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich, said:

“Simon’s commitment to marriage equality has helped grow the campaign to one that now has more public and parliamentary support than ever before.”

“Simon should be especially proud in the role he played in organising the Dinner with the PM with same-sex couples, the hugely popular “It’s Time” video, and game-changing role GetUp played at the ALP National Conference that resulted in their policy change to favour same-sex marriage”.

Mr Greenwich said he looks forward to working with incoming GetUp National Director Sam Mclean:

“Sam shares Simon’s commitment to the reform and his vision to make Australia a more fair and equitable place”.
