Marriage equality advocates have accused the Australian Christian Lobby of devaluing the marriages of childless heterosexual Australians in a new anti-gay marriage ad which says the Marriage Act “legislates” procreation.

Australian Marriage Equality national convener, Alex Greenwich said,

“By stating that marriage is primarily about child-rearing, the ACL is devaluing the marriages of heterosexual couples who cannot or choose not to have children.”

“It is also ignoring the fact that a quarter of same-sex couples are raising children.”

According to the new ACL ad,

“The Marriage Act is not only about love…. The boy and the girl decided they wanted to get married because… One day they might want to make little boys and little girls of their own and raise their future generations together as a couple. That’s what the Marriage Act legislates.”

Mr Greenwich said the Marriage Act is silent about procreation and child-rearing.

“The ACL is welcome to have whatever view of marriage it has, but for most Australians marriage is fundamentally a lifelong commitment between loving partners that might involve raising children, but is not diminished if children are absent.”
