ARE gay parents really doing a bad job? On the face of it, the results of a large US study are alarming.

University of Texas researchers studied 3000 young adults (aged 18-39) and found those with gay parents earned less money, had poorer mental health, poorer relationships and were more likely to be on welfare or to be unemployed.

In the middle of a fierce debate over whether we should change the law to allow same-sex couples to be legally married, it appears to be a damning finding.

However, we need to take a closer look.
