The transition from status to contract has been acknowledged as the most significant marker of modernisation. Status, as exemplified by birth and gender in feudal society, is static and unchanging.
In contrast, contract, in which two parties negotiate the terms of a transaction, implies freedom of movement and choice in accordance with the principles of autonomy and equality.
