It has been confirmed that South Australia’s Premier Jay Weatherill will grant a conscience vote for all Labor MPs in the state’s Parliament if a marriage equality bill is introduced locally should federal efforts at legislating for same-sex marriage fail this year.

It means South Australia will become the first state to allow a full free vote for both major parties on the issue of same-sex marriage legislation.

In late March, Greens MLC Tammy Franks told SX that it seemed Weatherill (pictured) was likely to allow a conscience vote for Labor MP following a meeting with the Caucus of the Labor Party.
