A group of Australian psychologists has recently formed ‘Psychologists for Marriage Equality’, to raise awareness about the strong link between the right to marry and mental health.

Evidence strongly suggests that the inability to marry has a direct connection with psychological harm through confirmation of underlying negative beliefs, adding to ‘minority stress’, adding another layer of challenge for those in long term committed relationships through a lack of validation.

That’s why marriage equality has been endorsed by groups such as the Australian Psychological Society, the American Psychological Association, the American Psychiatric Association, the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre (Australia), and the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy.
