Australian same-sex couples who married in Canada have welcomed a decision by the country’s government to close a loophole that may have invalidated their marriages.
The announcement by the Canadian Justice Minister, Rob Nicholson, came after a lawyer there acting in a same-sex divorce case argued in court that Canadian marriages involving foreign same-sex couples were not valid unless same-sex marriages were legal in the couple’s home country.
