TONY Abbott has faced a concerted push for a conscience vote on same-sex marriage from the highest levels of his shadow cabinet, with a string of frontbenchers challenging his position at a closed-door meeting yesterday.

The Opposition Leader admitted to “a lengthy discussion” on marriage equality in shadow cabinet yesterday, but said the meeting had resolved to affirm the position the Coalition took to the last election.
