Perhaps matrimony should be made more exclusive and special – not so as to keep out gays, but to get heterosexuals interested.
Now that Labor has recognised that permanent gay unions are as entitled to the name of matrimony as any other union, it might be a good idea for the state, as well as the church, to decide what it means by marriage, and the rights and responsibilities that it imposes upon everyone who is involved.
