THE day Dutch women Anne-Marie Thus and Helene Faasen became the world’s first female couple to marry, Thus wore a flowing yellow-gold gown with yellow roses in her hair and Faasen opted for a white dress and veil. Thus laughs: “She’s got the hair for it … I thought, she can have it.”

Ten years after the Netherlands became the world’s first country to allow same-sex marriage, they live in Maastricht with their two children, Nathan, 11, and Myrthle, 9, both of whom Thus gave birth to using an anonymous sperm donor.
