SENIOR ALP figures are mounting a furious rearguard attempt to save Julia Gillard from the humiliation of an enforced parliamentary vote in favour of gay marriage, warning her prime ministership would be fatally damaged if Labor MPs were refused a conscience vote on the issue.

Ms Gillard is now all but certain to fail in her bid to prevent a re-write of the ALP platform endorsing same-sex marriage at the Labor conference, which starts tomorrow.
