Right-wing Labor powerbroker Mark Arbib says he disagrees with Julia Gillard that the ALP party platform should stay opposed to gay marriage.

The right of the party is split on whether the party platform should also be changed.

Ms Gillard has stated today that while she wants to allow a conscience vote, she wants the party platform to stay opposed to gay marriage and state that marriage is a union between a man and a woman.

Asked if he agrees Senator Arbib said: ”No. I believe the platform needs to reflect the party’s differing viewpoints and a new conscience position, but that is a debate for conference,” he said.

Senator Arbib, who supports both same-sex marriage and a conscience vote, told The Australian this morning that he disagrees with the Left that the laws cannot pass unless the ALP has a binding position.
