In what was supposed to be a squeaker, Democrat Liz Mathis solidly defeated Republican Cindy Golding, 56%-43% for an Iowa State Senate seat, thereby keeping Democrats in control of the State Senate. This is a crucial win since Republicans control the State House and the Governor’s mansion.

Congratulations Senator-elect Mathis!

Iowa Senate Majority Leader Mike Gronstal has stated repeatedly that, so long as he is in control, the Republican-sponsored amendment to define marriage as solely between a man and a woman which has passed the House will not be brought up for a vote. That means nothing happens on the amendment until at least 2013, and then presumably only if Republicans were to win control of the Senate.
