Across Australia, the Labor Party’s state leaders support gay marriage law reform, so Prime Minister Julia Gillard’s announcement today that the party’s upcoming Annual Conference will be democratic and involve policy-changing discussion is a welcome one.

“I want there to be debates. I want there to be surprises… I don’t want to get my way on every precise detail,” she admitted this morning in a major speech from Old Parliament House.

“I don’t want everything sewn up by some meeting at midnight the night before – I do want change.”
