Support for same-sex marriage caught on fire after the openly gay brother of a conservative MP Bob Katter appeared on national television, the lobby group GetUp! says.
The group presented a petition of more than 55,000 signatures to federal MPs on Wednesday, after placing a full-page ad in The Australian newspaper saying more than 48,000 people were in favour of changing the Marriage Act to accept same-sex marriage.
GetUp! national director Simon Sheik said there was a last-minute rush of signatures following an interview with same-sex marriage advocate and gay man Carl Katter, the half brother of independent MP Bob Katter, on Network Ten.
