A LEADING gay activist says federal politicians have not gone far enough in quizzing their community about gay marriage laws.

Broadcaster and social commentator Doug Pollard said it was clear that MPs had not spoken to gay members of their community in order to formulate a balanced opinion.

Last November, Melbourne Greens MP Adam Bandt put forward a motion asking all members to survey their electorates on support for gay marriage. The motion was passed 73 to 72. MPs are due to report on the findings of their polls at the August 24 sitting.
