Two women spoke up on the issue of same-sex marriage recently, and they were both gaga.

The first was Lady Gaga, the internationally famous pop sensation who has brought talent and Performance Art back into the cultural mainstream. We all heard how she performed for a few hundred gay fans at Nevermind and ARQ. I know around two thousand people who were there. Gaga also went on A Current Affair to tell Australian politicians what year it was (2011, for the record – some of our politicians are about 100 years out) and to suggest they get on with legalising same-sex marriage. The following Saturday there was a column in the Herald by opinion writer David Humphries, entitled ‘Pity Us If We Let Gaga Do Our Thinking’. In 1200 words he asked: why should a visiting pop star influence local opinion on this issue? I can answer that in three words: because she’s right.
