Hundreds of thousands of Australians are proudly out; virtually everyone today knows someone – a work colleague, friend, family member, classmate or acquaintance – who is gay or lesbian.

After years of campaigning for legal equality for individuals, the time has come to recognise relationships as well.

Marriage is a civil institution and, in the eyes of many, the highest level of relationship recognition in our society.

Many parts of the world, from South Africa to Spain and most recently New York, recognise same-sex marriage. The sky has not yet fallen in.

As with all issues this one provokes disagreement. But there is only one thing to say in response to those who oppose same-sex marriage: If you don’t like it, don’t have one.
