Cynthia Nixon has never been silent on the topic of gay marriage, and not just because she’s keen to walk down the aisle.

June 24, 2011. Gay rights supporters chant and dance in the streets of New York City, kicking off days of celebration over the state senate’s approval of the same-sex marriage bill.

As celebrities across the US applaud the landmark new law, actor Alec Baldwin exclaims on Twitter, “Congrats, again, to Cynthia Nixon for all of her hard work on behalf of marriage equality.”

Rewind a few weeks, and with the senate tantalisingly close to voting on the bill (it will later pass by 33 votes to 29), actor and activist Cynthia Nixon is struggling to contain her excitement.

“It’s not done until it’s done, obviously. You don’t want to count chickens, you want to count votes. But there’s a feeling of optimism we’ve never had before, being one vote away and having the support of the governor [Andrew Cuomo] the way we do,” she says, devouring her salmon lunch at a French bistro on the Upper West Side. “I feel as if this is totally going to happen.”
