Sam di Brito argues why it is time for heterosexual supporters of marriage equality to stand up and be counted:

An elderly man who lives on my street growled at me last month that he’d seen me on TV recently, “talking about poofs f—ing each other – that it’s OK for the sick faggots to do that stuff”.

That was all I heard because I closed my front door, leaving him to finish the conversation with his fleas and the mummified relative he has propped up in his lounge room (all right, I’m joking about the fleas).

He was referring to an appearance I’d made on Mia Freedman’s Mamamia show on Sky News, in which I’d expressed bewilderment that posters of two gay men hugging had been taken down in Queensland after protests from Christians.

My point was that I was genuinely surprised there were still people in this country offended by anything a gay couple could do in the privacy of their own homes (or atop a float during Mardi Gras) …
