Queensland women are much more likely to support same sex marriage than men, a new statewide poll has revealed.

The phone poll, conducted by ReachTEL, revealed 55.9 per cent of women were in favour of equal marriage rights.

Of those women, 31.8 per cent were strongly in favour, and 24.1 per cent were somewhat in favour of same sex marriage.

Only 32.5 per cent of men favoured the idea, with just 17.3 per cent strongly supporting gay marriage.

Nearly half of the men surveyed, 48 per cent, were strongly opposed to gay marriage, with 10.6 per cent only “somewhat against”.

A further 12.6 per cent remained uncommitted.

ReachTEL asked 1025 people whether same sex couples should have the same rights to marry as couples consisting of a man and a woman.
