When Brendon Beavan, 37, met Michael Faucett, 46, more than four years ago, he wasn’t afraid to ask: “Do you believe in marriage?”

“Yes,” replied Michael, who admits it was love at first sight.

The Campbelltown couple sang a duet when asked to define what marriage is for them. “It’s about commitment, equality within societies, and demonstrating our love for each other,” they said.

The NSW branch of the Labor Party is expected to vote in support of gay marriage at its annual conference next month, calling for a change in national policy which only recognises marriage as between a man and a woman. The vote is likely to increase pressure on the Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, to legalise single-sex unions.

The NSW upper house MP Penny Sharpe said Labor state conferences in Queensland, Western Australia and South Australia have adopted similar motions calling for equal marriage rights for the gay and lesbian community.

Ms Sharpe said it would be the first time the issue would be debated at a national Labor conference, to be held in December this year.
