Labor same-sex marriage advocates have warned Julia Gillard not to stand in their way ahead of the party’s December national conference.

Western Australia Labor became the latest branch of the party to back marriage equality, at its state conference on Saturday.

The WA party also restated its opposition to uranium mining.

Queensland, South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria and the two territories have already backed marriage equality.

Whether NSW Labor now follows appears in the hands of state leader John Robertson.

Australian Workers Union national secretary and supporter of gay marriage Paul Howes said the issue should be “right down the bottom of the list” for the NSW Labor conference. Mr Robertson has publicly supported gay marriage in the past, discussing his personal experience with his own gay son.
