My partner, Sarah, and I have good cause to want to have dinner with the Prime Minister. It was our marriage in Canada in 2003 that prompted the Howard government to amend the Marriage Act to exclude recognition of overseas same-sex marriages and define marriage as between ”one man and one woman”.

After the birth of our first child we went to Canada – where Sarah is from – to show off our beautiful baby boy to his grandparents. The announcement that same-sex marriage was now legal came on the radio as we were driving along the highway one afternoon.

I couldn’t quite believe it at first, but as the news sunk in, there seemed only one thing to say: ”Honey, will you marry me?” We had been together 12 years and it seemed like a safe bet!
