The Labor Party in Queensland passed a motion today calling on federal Labor and the ALP national conference to support same-sex marriage.

Queensland branch president Andrew Dettmer said the move, if passed at national level, would end the last vestige of discrimination against non-heterosexual couples.

“The point I think we are all agreed about in our party is that discrimination against people on the basis of their gender or their sexual orientation is just as abominable and just as unsupportable as discrimination on the basis of race,” Mr Dettmer said.

“The party is now looking to rectify that and to ensure that what we have is marriage equality, and I think that will be a great day for Australia.”

Labor is deeply split on the issue of same-sex marriage.

Julia Gillard and the Right oppose same-sex marriage while the Left wants a rule change to support equity in marriage.
