Steve Russell and John Dini are butchers, they are gay, and they have heard all the jokes.

”Oh, the usual: ‘Getting in for your chop?’ and ‘You like a bit of sausage?’ You get used to it over the years,” says Mr Russell, 50, of Russell Family Meats in the Hoppers Crossing shopping centre in Melbourne.

There have been double-takes – ”you’re a butcher! you can’t be gay!” – but otherwise customers just want good service and quality meat. Mr Russell and Mr Dini feel part of the community except in one respect – they are not allowed to marry.
