Julia Gillard will host a dinner for three gay couples who will push her to support same-sex marriage, after activist groups GetUp! and Australian Marriage Equality won a charity auction at last night’s federal press gallery Midwinter Ball.

GetUp! raised $31,100 to gazump business leaders and clinch the prize of dinner for six with the Prime Minister at The Lodge.

A tennis lesson with Tony Abbott and tennis legend-turned-Liberal MP John Alexander went for just over $13,000, and a morning walk with Greens leader Bob Brown netted $3150.

GetUp! national director Simon Sheikh said the meal with Ms Gillard would give the same-sex couples the opportunity to make the case for marriage equality.

“The face-to-face time with the PM was billed as a unique opportunity for corporate Australia,” Mr Sheikh said.

“But rather than dining with executives and business leaders, Julia Gillard will be forced to make the case as to why these couples cannot have their relationships recognised in the same way other Australians do.”
