The Australian Labor Party has provided its members who support marriage equality the opportunity to make submissions to help shape party policy in the lead up to the ALP National Conference in December.

Through a webform launched by the ALP yesterday, supporters can suggest a change to party policy, the form can be accessed here

The moves comes during a week when polling was released showing 75% of Australians believe same-sex marriage will happen (details here) and the day after Senator John Faulkner urged the party to get back to its roots and listen to it’s membership:

“The party has become so reliant on focus groups that it listens more to those who don’t belong to it than to those who do”, Sen. Faulkner said.

An estimated 74% of ALP voters support same-sex marriage (details here), as do a majority of ALP State Leaders (details here).

Australian Marriage Equality National Convener, Alex Greenwich welcomed the ALP’s consultation process and urged marriage equality supporters to make their voice heard.

“We welcome this move by the ALP, which will enable the ALP’s many supporters of equality to play an active part in achieving an important reform a majority of Australians expect and support.”

“To help those wishing to send in a submission, we have set up a webpage with a step-by-step guide and important points to make.”

The AME guide can be found here.
